A Dark HourPDFPrintE-mail

Do we ever think of darkness as a possible energy source to ponder about?

Sitting in the dark celebrating the Earth Hour on Saturday, this was a thought that came to me. Now, given that the very hour was celebrated to conserve energy and more so, to reduce global warming, my mind wandered if the relative peace and the tranquil surrounding during dark hour is any indication to probe this question.

We think, we express and we exchange. Does a lighted world contribute to it? Given that we can see and feel the surrounding when lights are glowing around us, there’s a chance that we can also sense our inner being amidst the darkness. I remember having spent hours sitting on the beaches in Kovalam in complete darkness. A strange union with the splashes of sea waves appeared to enlighten my soul.

I feel the spring’s soft breeze isn’t too uninteresting to experience beyond the ceiling fans and the air-conditioners. This earth needs some time to breathe too. And it is during such times that it also allows us to think in tandem with the nature.

Centuries back, when there was no electricity, this life did move. And even if the bulbs and the fluorescent tubes weren’t around, men and women did find time to mingle with nature. Thousands of years back, may be, in some corner of the civilization light wasn’t the only energy they missed.

A light-less world, then, was more a natural one – that produced life and sustained it.

How many of us remember the darker skies during our childhood? Stars and constellations shining brighter on the limitless horizon wasn’t a forgotten sight. Stargazers united easily with the space atop, and those bright eyes of the stargazers pondered around the horizon with the hope of traversing the galaxy. The full moon was brighter, so were the passions exchanged during a moonlit night!

One may wonder if in this new century, the darkness needs to be revived.

I suppose it should be given a serious thought. When one enters the meditation room on the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, there’s a peaceful dark around. People sit on the floor with their eyes closed. None bothers since no one is really concerned about the other. Nothing is visible for that matter. A symbol of ‘Om’ remains lighted – the only source of peaceful coexistence.

Still one could spend hours sitting there.

We do need the darkness for some time. This Earth has moved many lighted hours, and it may feel that the lightlessness is something to be preserved in history. But, if I may add, there were nobler minds on this planet born and brought up during darker conditions. The Renaissance period may not have been this lighted. So, a debate can exist. It will be interesting to understand how these noble souls looked at this aspect of darkness in expanding their lives.

Welcome the Earth Hour, for it has coaxed me to feel the darkness to.

The creator had gifted the earthlings equal hours of light and darkness. However we have come to a pass wherein we can now choose the tenure of lighted hours based on our needs. Man has conquered darkness and is threatening to do away with it. Finally darkness is destined to be a luxury that men enjoy during holidays. Regds Idle , nice to see you back.
