THE JUGGERNAUT OF VIOLENCE

The beautiful valley of Kashmir has not been free of terror for decades now. The tragedy is in the apparent helplessness of the Central Government in meeting with the crisis. The death toll and the casualties simply keep rising, like the swell of a tsunami, sparing not even the children. Truly a pity that even the innocent are not spared. Disruption is the order of the day. Again, the complete irresponsibility of the Central government is brought into the foray, for not meeting with the needs of the people. But then again, the Capitol is busy meeting up with the "pressing" demands of the Commonwealth Games to look into other matters. If half the administration is looking into unnecessary items, the rest is trying to wriggle out of scandals of some sort or the other, political, sexual, social. And then buying their fifteen minutes of fame on national television, which channels are waiting to pounce on like jackals.

Regionalism exists but maybe that is the beauty to be focused upon, not a bone of contention. And through it see the different needs of the people. What India needs is not secularism or socialism or communism. It needs a healthy dose of humanism. It is heartening to see some at the top making an effort, even a minimalist one. Maybe what the people need is fresh blood in the ropes of the country. But not fresh blood spilt on the fertile grounds of India. It is a matter to see how many police and civilian lives are lost and homes wrecked before anyone takes any action. A recuperative one. Not with guns, but with actions, new positive legislations.

But maybe most unsettling is the complacency of the common folk of the Indian nation. The blind onlookers who seem not to be bothered by the ripples of terror and hardly contained cracks of separation that is seeping into the Indian consciousness. If India is preparing to make her second trip to the Moon, her underbelly is trapped in a savage age, full of black money, superstitions, narrow mindedness, inhibitions and worst of all, prejudice. Education is simply a farce, a means to a mercenary end. A tool of a consumerist, commercial society. Is there any aspect of this beautiful country that has not been left tainted? And no amount of correctional movies seems to make a dint of a difference. Terrifying. Even the Media is losing its power to the soporific, over whelming detachment of the people who once united to fight for their freedom. Is that what will take to pull all Indians in together again, a saga of torture and impoverishment? Pathetic.

A democracy is built by the people, for the people, of the people. India is soon slipping into a parody of Abraham Lincoln's proclamation. For what use is “democracy” if the little children in the Valley of Heaven are being shot dead or imprisoned, that they see no future except a bleak one, that their present is an ironical cruel joke? Do not the ministers have children of their own, to sympathize and empathize enough to act?

Ah, the cruel curse of materialistic detachment.
