The existence of God, or Divinity; has been affirmed, denied, debated over and indoctrinated for almost as long as civilization itself. Although the finer details have undergone manifold changes over the millennia, the basic essentials remain the same:
“There exists a human-like force or being, which/who created this entire Universe, governs it, and if need so arises, can change it.”
For me, however, God isn’t the one who created the Universe, and hence, alien to it. I think that God is the Universe. Every being, every cell, every molecule, atom and quark; every little law that Nature follows is God.
Of course, that does raise a few very pertinent questions. For starters, which came first- God or the Universe? My answer to that would be the very wise saying:
“A circle has no beginning.”
Maybe God was blasted into being the same way matter and time were from singularity during the Big Bang. And if recent theories which say that the Universe destroys and creates itself in an infinite cycle of uncountable eons, are indeed correct- perhaps, God is reborn with each cycle of the Universe.
Think about it: the whole of physics can be reduced to 7 fundamental constants- constants where a change of even a hundredth would radically change the Universe as we know it. In fact, it might not even be able to exist. Surely, such elegant precision can’t be chalked up to mere chance?
And that’s where I see God the most- in the eternally graceful cycles of the Cosmos; Divinity shines on in the each perfectly coordinated step. In this endless quest for stability, I find echoes of the Divine Will.
Human like. That’s another adjective we assign to God. He’s supposed to be just, benevolent, fatherly, loving, compassionate and merciful.
In short, He personifies every human ideal: but that’s just it- why human? Why should God have to emulate one particular species of an obscure planet; in an even more obscure galaxy? And to digress briefly, even amongst humans, definitions vary- euthanasia is murder for some, and compassion for others.
This is precisely why I find tags like ‘just’ and ‘merciful’ and (the worst thus far) ‘good’ to be far, far too simplistic to be applied to Divinity.
In fact, leave alone God, labels like that are too simple to describe even humans.
To quote the author Phillip Pullman, “‘Good’ and ‘Evil’ are names for what people do; not what they are. People are too complicated to have simple labels like that.”
God can do anything. That’s yet another attribute we accord to the God Head. Supposedly, he can change anything in this Universe whenever he wants to, because he is the Supreme Ruler.
I would beg to differ.
Utter, supreme power and complete invincibility go against every Law of the Universe. In nature, abnormal power equates to instability. And as the Universe is what defines him, is what he is, he can’t violate those very Laws. God is bound by the same laws that we are. The only difference being, while we obey blindly; he knows why.
God eludes definition because we’re not meant to define Him. If we wanted to truly know Him, we’d have to rise to His status. For to fully understand Him would be to know everything, because that’s what He is for me: the Whole, the Absolute. The Infinite.
