Now days Shashi Tharoor and Controversy are becoming synonyms. News papers are getting Masala news about Tharoor at regular intervals. Though it may be related his personal life or political stands. His earlier statements stirred people’s emotion but he came out of it with only some scratches but now his external affair cost him his external affair ministry. Before directly commenting on his current turmoil we need to also look into his past.

Dr Shashi Tharoor is well-know writer, journalist who received many awards for his prolific writing. His child hood written story books “Bharat Jyoti” and “Operation Bellows” are well known. He’s best selling book is “The Great Indian Novel” which is quite famous all over the world. He also wrote editorial columns in TOI, Indian Express and a lot other famous news papers. Shashi also received doctorate at the age of 22 only. His bright spark was recognized by United Nations and he joined UN as an employee. In 2001 Shashi moved on further ladder of UN with position of “Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information”.

In 2006 he was nominated for the post of UN Secretary General by India government.
This nomination opened doors for him to Indian politics which was considered as clumsy, wrestling ground for Mafia, dons who likes to win the election through coercion rather than nobility. So Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Sing gave him chance to prove his mettle in Indian politics by giving green flag to participate in Assembly election from ‘Tiruantapuram’ constituency. Many people delighted by this move as it allowed a highly qualified person to enter into politics. This wave of sympathy helped
Tharoor to win from constituency and represent into Loksabha. Dr. Shashi Tharoor’s entry in Indian Politics was considered as a paradigm shift for Indian politics and he was awarded with ministry of External Affairs. But his entry started with controversies.

First one was staying in five star hotels. He was highly criticized for staying in Luxurious Five star hotel as he was using common people’s money. He answered this by saying that he paid the bill through his own account. While he was midst of this controversy he twitted on twitter “I can travel in Cattle class in railway”. This again humiliated common people as general class in railway was called as Cattle class ultimately comparing common people with cattle. This comparison ignited much flays by common man. Finally Manmohan Singh clarified saying that the statement by Tharoor was just a joke nothing to do with serious business.

Now the last one which caused Tharoor to abandon his ministry is IPL controversy. Indian Premier League, business of Cricket, involved many conglomerates to bid for different team as Sharukh Khan Bid for Kolkata Night Riders, Mukesh Bid for Mumbai Indians. Shashi could not keep him away from this luster. So he asked Lalit Modi, master mind behind the IPL, to give sweat equity shares 4.5% of Kochi team to his close friend Sunanda Pushkar and asked him to not to disclosing it any where. It is was demand from Shashi to pay back favor done by him to Lalit Modi by extending the Visa of South African model very close to Lalit Modi. This became a major tornado for tycoon like Shashi Tharoor as he used his Political powers for personal gain. He denied
the entire allegations but could not support them as he was caught up by the SMS, he send to Lalit Modi for bending the bidding rules. The proofs were so candid that God father Manmohan Sing could not save him from this allegation ultimately asking him to renounce from the ministry.

This is an attack on public image of Shashi Tharoor and got him in catch22 as couldn’t accept it and deny it. Finally he stepped down. The offense by Tharoor cannot be considered as serious one when compared with the records of other politicians involved in criminal cases, money laudering, misuse of public money, accumulation of disproportionate assets etc.

But question arises why Tharoor has to abjure his ministry when others holding their chairs shamelessly? Answer seems to be that Shashi Tharoor’s behavior has given a big blow to general belief that educated person can change the face of India when he joins politics. The great examples set by Abdul Kalam, Manmohan Singh who have clean image till now.

The incident has raised the creditability on the image of highly educated person.
