Thursday, 23rd April 2009, our office had declared holiday for the parliamentary election 2009. Monday morning we received a mail from our HR saying because of this extra holiday, compensation working day is following Saturday. Mixed reactions amongst all of us. “Wow a break in mid- week”, “shit man, I thought this weekend, I'll finish my shopping, I will require at least 2 days”, “Crap, by Thursday this week's movies would not be released”. While all this was going on, my teammates and I were busy planning for a resort outing, as weekday prices are just half the rates than weekend. Within 1 or 2 hours everyone was ready with their plans. Evening I go back to my PG, I get to hear my roommates plans also.

I am leading my day to day life normally peacefully without even bothering what is going on in my home. If any mishap happens anywhere I just check out news headlines, and a 7 seconds thought, poor fellow, an what-our-government-is-doing-expression on my face. That’s all I move on in my life. What was my contribution in Election 2009? Every day morning I check news channels for latest updates, which new tie up is in air, who's using which bollywood actor for campaigning, I follow all these bullshits. Coffee break in office, some more bullshit discussion with colleagues. But what for? My last and final goal is never accomplished. DO I VOTE? The answer is no. Not only for me but for I do not know how many more good for nothing young Indians. What does Election Day mean to us? Just another holiday? What are we doing with it? I am now 22, eligible for choosing the leader of my great nation. But shameful and dishonoring fact is, I do not even have a Voter ID card of mine. I just could not manage to get my name registered for voter's list in all these 4 years. And I sit and complain Bangalore is not safe for girls anymore, government is not doing anything for women. When I asked my roommate if she has got one, she is worse. It seems though she has got a card, it'll take 36 hours to go to the hometown, which in 1 day's break she cannot manage to go. Hopeless!!

Nearly 50% of Indians are under 25 years old, thus making it one of the youngest democracies in the world. And if these Young Indians are people like me then I have nothing left to pen.
