As usual the hunter left for jungle that afternoon. He set his trap and waited for the sun to set. It was a lucky day. He returned with a parrot nest. He thought, “I will train the birds; they will be the most beautiful voice this village has ever heard. I will sell them at good amount.” With all his enthusiasm he started training the unruly, wild birds. As days passed, all the parrots were able to sing but one. The master wondered, there must be something wrong with the bird. He tried different methods but no results.
In frustration, the master thought to teach the bird a lesson. He didn’t serve food for two days while the other birds were fed like generously. Next morning, the bird started talking. Below is the conversation between the master and parrot. Parrot – Master I am thirsty, give me some water. Master – Sing me a song. Parrot – My throat is dry. Master – Sing me a song. The parrot tried hard to recite a song his master has taught all these days but the voice cracked. Master – You foolish bird, this is what I have taught all these months? You bring shame to me. Parrot – Master, I tried my best. Master – Look, how they sing. The master instructs the other parrot to sing and the bird sings and dances merrily. Master – Why can’t you sing like them? Parrot - I don’t have a sweet voice. Master – How am I to believe that?
Parrot – (Silence) Master – Parrots are not gonna say this. They need to sing for us, for humans. Parrot – Master…. Master – You ugly bird… Parrot – Release me from this cage. Master – Where will you fly, your family is here. Parrot – I will fly high. Master (Laughs) – You foolish bird. Do you know your life over there? Parrot – (Silence) Master - The eagles will kill you. Parrot – I will fly higher. Master – Eagles fly higher than you. Parrot – I will hide when eagles are around. Master – The other birds will go to the best house, richest in the town. Parrot – I will meet the clouds.
Master – They will entertain their master, they will get best things. Parrot – I will see Rain. Master – They will get Golden cage. Parrot – I will meet the stars. Master – They will get the sweetest of berries. Parrot – I will eat wild berries. Master – They will get best comfort. Parrot – I will meet the Sun. Master – You cannot cross its rays, it will burn your wings. Parrot - (Silence) Master – How are you gonna fly without your wings? How are you gonna live this world, without your voice? Master – How? Parrot (Silence) – I will hide from the Eagles, I will fly high, I will fly higher, I will meet stars, I will meet clouds, I will see rain, I will meet see the Sun. Master (Ha Ha)– You will die of snowstorm outside. Parrot – Master... (silence) Parrot - One day, I am gonna die here too. Master – Outside, you will get killed by other birds. Parrot – I don’t want to get killed by humans too. Master – You will die of hunger. Parrot - I will be responsible for my own death. Master – Outside is no place for you, you will die soon. Parrot – Master, can you live to see me dead one day here. Master – I don’t care, after I sell you. Parrot – I don’t want you to be responsible for my death. There is a long silence. The master goes away and returns with the key. He opens the cage. Master – Go away, Go away... My customers won’t buy a mute bird. The parrot comes out of the cage and sits over it. He jumps to the shoulders of his master. Parrot – Master, someday you will see me high on the sky. Flying over the clouds, singing with winds, rain drops over my wings and Sun rays crossing my wings, a shadow of me on the earth. Master – I will wait. The parrot flaps his wings, flies away. The sun rays warm, the wind cool and vast space of blue empty sky before him. A Great song by Pearl Jam Black
