Television Show: Supernatural
Bad ass! That’s the first phrase that comes to mind when I think of the TV Show, Supernatural. Originally debuting in 2005 on the WB Network, it is now part of the CW’s line-up.
The show follows the lives of two brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester as they battle all sorts of evil beings: everything from ghosts to werewolves to demons.
The pilot episode (which first aired in the US on 13/09/2005) begins with a day in the life of a 22 year old Sam Winchester, a student at Harvard with a promising future, and a beautiful girlfriend. Everything comes crashing down however, when Sam’s older brother, Dean comes exploding into his apartment with the cryptic news, “Dad went on a hunting trip, and didn’t come back.”
It is later revealed that the boys’ father, John Winchester, was a hunter of evil, supernatural beings: ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and the whole shebang- a ‘calling’ he had trained both his sons’ in. While Dean unquestionably makes ‘hunting’ his whole life, Sam revolts during his teenage years; going against his father’s wishes to get into college. This is frequently a source of tension between the brothers throughout the series.
Although initially reluctant to go with his brother; citing an upcoming interview with a major law firm, Sam eventually relents and goes on a road trip with his brother- eventually helping to put to rest a Woman in White- a homicidal spirit of a woman who had been cheated by her husband in life.
Satisfied with a job well done, Sam returns to his apartment- to a horrific tragedy. Pinned to the ceiling above him by an unseen force is the bleeding form of his girlfriend; and even as he watches in horror, she bursts into flame- the exact same way that Sam’s mother had been killed 22 years ago; the reason why his father became a hunter in the first place.
The episode ends with a resolute Sam joining his brother, darkly proclaiming, “We’ve got work to do.”
From then on, Supernatural has not looked back. Five years later, it is now a cult series, with International Conventions being held on it all over the world, and a fan base running into millions worldwide.
The first two seasons were more of weekly installments of horror stories, with very few arcs. Mostly, each episode focused on the boys’ encountering a new creature every week. With the third season, however, the show’s format shifted to a broader, season wide plot arc. Correspondingly, the brothers mostly faced off with demons- particularly, a demon Lillith which took the form of a beguilingly sweet little girl, notching up the ‘creepiness factor’ by quite a few points.
Season 4 was primarily about Sam and Dean’s race against time to stop Lillith from breaking the 66 Mystical Seals which kept Satan, or Lucifer locked in Hell. The season ends with the last seal being broken unwittingly by Sam himself, and Lucifer finally being freed after eons.
Season 5 dealt with the boys’ battle with the oldest demon of all- the Devil.
It’s horribly common for a TV Show in the Fantasy/Horror genre going downhill after the initial seasons- Supernatural, however, has continued to prove people wrong in that respect. If anything, it has gotten better with each passing season.
If Seasons 1 and 2 were relatively more light hearted, with two brothers road tripping across the country, facing all manners of evil creatures, Seasons 3 through 5 were far darker, grittier and infinitely more epic- with the boys being pitched bang in the middle of a raging war between Heaven and Hell. The best part? The wonderful cast pulled it off with admirable aplomb!
The major reason why Supernatural worked would be its characters. There have been far too many fantasy TV Shows with confused, half baked characters running along with a gamut of special effects.
Supernatural begs to differ. The protagonists, Sam and Dean Winchester are extremely layered, three dimensional characters who have evolved wonderfully with the plot, as has the chemistry between them.
When it first started out, the brotherly interactions were great to watch: tongue-in-cheek, endearing with resentment simmering under the surface- an absolutely delicious mix. With the show’s progress, however, so many other facets were woven into their relationship. Love, resentment, betrayal, anger, grief.
None of this, of course, would ever have made it to the screen if it hadn’t been for the talented cast of the show: particularly, the leading men, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
And of course, as the female/gay fans will agree: the fact that the two actors have ‘eye candy’ written all over themselves doesn’t really hurt!
