Some days ago I was travelling in a local bus. The notoriety of the local buses better left unmentioned. Every now and then the bus was crossing over potholes, humps, cornering sharp cuts, accelerating at some crazy speed, overtaking, applying sudden brakes. I was practially leaning & pushing to my fellow passengers. After dancing some time to the tunes of the driver I was lucky enough to get a seat. I anticipated the rest of my journey to be a lot smoother. I plugged the headphone into my ears. A radio jockey was breaking hell inside my ears, felt like blowing my ears with his cheap mimics and sense of humour. The ads in the radio are the most irritating stuff in this world. The ideas to attract the TRP are also the same boring & repeated ones mostly focussed on the couples and their puppy loves. Switching off the radio and changing back to the songs made the journey smoother. I felt the state of trance, when George Michael was “Whispering Carelessly” inside my ears. A girl with ignorant eyes entered into the bus with her only friend. Her eyes being ignorant were devoid of all the beautiful things that nature has bestowed us. Those are the pair of beautiful eyes that I had seen ever. Can those eyes answer the colours of the rainbow?
Who else can be friends, when her eyes are foes?
She entered gracefully with her friend, a long foldable stick. Those eyes were lost in the crowd. I too was lost with the thousand innocent dreams in them. She refused politely to the offering of my seat. A guilt feeling down my spine. This time I lied that my journey was near about complete. She whispered a thanks to me. I studied her closely, sitting silently near the window and all alone she was trying to guess the motion of the bus from the smell and aroma of the places. May be she is trying to catch the intermittent phrases from the bus conductor in the chaotic noise. Being impatient, she asked twice a co-passenger about the location of the bus, the passenger being impatient too calmed her down by some stingy words “Your stoppage is a long way from here”.
After all, who cares??
She was enjoying her journey. But was that enjoyment?
People got changed at every stops. The bus wheels rolled with its breathtaking speed. As the sun was setting, cool breeze was blowing through the window and they always act acted as a catalyst for short naps. After all a short nap is sinnable. Most of the times, these naps will be abandoned when the bus takes a U-turn or an abrupt brake is pressed. One of the above reason, interrupted her short nap. Being cautious, she dared to ask another co-passenger about the stoppage. He relied, “Your stoppage is already way behind”.
How can this happen? In such a short nap, the bus already exceeded my stoppage and the conductor too didn't alerted me? She requested the conductor to halt the bus. I decided to follow her to observe her course of action. Out of the bus she enquired the by-standers about the address and landmark of the present location. It seemed that she was conversant with the location. I interfered to help her. She requested me to locate a particular bus which can take to her destination. I tried to convince her that we both are heading towards the same destination so I can lead her. During the journey, I asked about her life and she shared many things. I tried to look the life through her eyes and it was a real scarry feeling for me.
I helped her reach to house. She requested me to enter visit her house. I met her mother & she thanked me.
A strange voice shouted from the other room, “So, another stranger helped you. Thank you Mr. ..... for saving my child. How many times shall I have warned you not to go alone?”
“Papa till what point will you be for me to protect? One day, i have to learn living of my own. Help me find my way. After you, I will suffer life with dignity.”
The words made me cry, and I thanked God myself for being counted among thousands of strangers for their ever helping attitude.
The incident reminded me of some scholarly words, and I am grateful for this incident.
