Yesterday I was trying my hands at “SPIRIT CALL”. After a long deliberation I and my friend decided to call Mr Karl Marx. And we actually did. When we are through the process, suddenly the small cup started moving on its own. We asked “Who are you?” . The cup slid over to the letters: K, A, R, L, M, A, R, X.
We are thinking what to ask, suddenly a white figure arrived. It was rather barely visible but we can hear the weeping sound very clearly. My friend asked, “Mr Marx, why are you crying?” The figure replied, “I am crying because all you made me cry for last two hundred years.” I asked rather abruptly (for me a spirit crying was something unusual and more so a German spirit talking in English!!) “Mr Marx, Why do you think your philosophy has failed to get any toe-hold in this great Indian sub-continent: the land of poor and exploited?” And Marx replies:
“Subjective perception of objective reality is the primary source for a class struggle. But you people have taken the concept of subjective perception in a disarticulated manner. My philosophy is not the universal one. It has the flexibility to adapt to the environment and cultural setting of the country. But you Indians have failed to see this aspect. You have adopted a Marxist or Maoist or a Leninist ideology from a different culture and try to fit into yours. In the way you are alienating your people more than the bourgeoisie. Why don’t you develop a new form of class liberating philosophy more suitable to your culture, say Indian socialism or something of that sort? Why do you still feel proud to be a member of Maoist party or a Marxist-Leninist party? Your culture is not the same as that of Russia or China. You are not a country being ruled by a tyrannical tsarist regime to be overthrown by a Vanguard Lenin. Neither are you a country to be cowed down by a Mao-Tse-Tung through the barrel of the gun.
Your misery has a long history. You know when I had my last laugh? It was then when M.N. Roy criticized Lenin on his colonial policy. I dreamt another free mind has evolved. Don’t you think I have all through my life has asked for a free man, and does not a free man mean a man with free ideas, free from the clichés of Marxism, Maoism and Leninism? But since then I have faced only heart breaks on this great land. The day when Communist party of India kept itself away from the Indian National movement on the plea that the USSR joined hands with British, I thought Indians stabbed me on my chest thousand times. How can you guys like to follow the path on which Lenin walked even if that amounts to keep away from your freedom struggle? I say this is utter madness. You can’t be free if you are under a colonial yoke. But you, Indian Marxists, refuse to understand. Your refusal is the very betrayal of the socialist cause.
Now, let me not go to such long time back in history because not you, even not your fathers were born at that time. Today, what you are you doing? Do you think, the revolution you are doing by killing policemen in public is supported by me any of my thesis. You may take solace in the overtly disarticulated Maoism, but you are not Chinese. Some, who tried to hijack the Rajdhani Express, may take the refuse in the philosophy of Che Guevara. But mind you, you are not under a dictatorial Batisa regime, rather you are a thriving democracy. How many wrongs are you going to do in the name of communism? and in the process vindicating the very purpose of communism. I have throughout my life preached for a free man but you are all through your life striving towards a more exploited society. Why don’t you take a new world view, new meaning to communism? Have you guys; the great land of Roys, Danges, and Joshis; become so short of ideas that you have to cling to a foreign ideology? When the Naxalite revolution broke out Mao remarked a new dawn for India and you were very happy. But I say you should be ashamed of yourself. How can you take on the appraisal of a foreign power to diminish your own country? Looking at all this I cry and I cry for ever.”
With this the white shadow subsided into the darkness of the room. Me and my friend sat there flabbergasted.
