Shraddha (Name Changed) was getting threatening messages on a popular social networking sites. She was advised to report abuse against the user. Yet, the problem persisted for more than a month after which she sought the escapist route --- She deleted her account. Her friends thought of it as a cowardly thing to do but she didn't care as long as she was sure of her own safety and security. This incident is not only reflective of the dissipation of the reputation of a famous social networking site but also of the fast growing fear which exists among the teenagers of today who use these websites. They may be faced with a multitude of threatening messages anytime which is enough to psychologically unnerve them. Psychologist Samir Mehra says that some of these incidents creates such deep psychological problems in teenagers that it may hamper their future life. The most important assault on them is the mental torture and living under the constant pressure of the fear that they can be harmed any moment, that they are not SAFE.
On conducting a survey among teenagers of major metro cities like Kolkata, Mumbai and New-Delhi, it was found that in a sample of 100 subjects tested, at least 82% had at some point or the other been stalked or faced abuse on social networking sites. Some even complained of their systems getting hacked and their personal files were majorly tampered with. Aashka Ray, a second year student of St Stephen's College,Delhi says, "I made friends with this guy from Dehradun last year. Within a month we became fast friends. Then suddenly I noticed some of my photographs on my computer missing. I could not understand how. And after sometime, I found my photos on his account. This explained it all. I strongly advise all who use Orkut and Facebook, never accept requests from strangers." Aradhna Mathur of St Xavier's College,Mumbai said, "I was literally addicted to orkutting, till I was faced with the ills of it. A guy started whom I had rejected started threatening me. He sent me messages written 'Ask your Mom to keep you safe' and 'I'll judge your life now' using dirty slangs for me. I did not know what to do. I reported abuse against his account but his account is still active on orkut which goes out to prove how much orkut cares for the safety of its users. I had to delete my account. My friends were shocked to see me chicken out this way but nothing counts more than personal safety."

Ishika Vorah, a popular freelance cyber journalist explains, "The main reason for the loss of popularity of Orkut was its inability to secure its users. One cannot be sure of his/her privacy especially on Orkut. Since its an open site, anyone can browse through your account. Though the major revolution in social networking was brought about by Orkut, and till today it is undoubtedly the most used social networking site but its popularity has received severe blows. It could not sustain what it had created for itself and thus it has resulted in the growth of popularity of safer social networking sites like Facebook."

Gurudev Nair, a Website Analyst describes, "As a website, Orkut is more user friendly than Facebook. It also won the MTV Youth Icon Award in the popular category a few years ago but it has not dealt with the security concerns aptly. As per criminal statistics, the abuse rate reported on Orkut was the highest. One of the cases which caught Public Attention was the Adnan Patrawala Murder Case." The more ardent loyalists of Orkut though had a different song to sing. Rehan Oberoi , an Indian settled in Sydney, says, "Orkut is very useful. The use and misuse of something depends on the user itself. Personally, Orkut has helped me keep in touch with my friends who live in India and whom I get to meet once or twice a year."

Since I have personally suffered abuse on social networking sites, I empathize with all users who perhaps go Through it everyday. We cannot do much about it, but a lot of us perhaps don't even know that there are particular codes and Law s in the Indian Constitution against this and if we act by them, we can get those users jailed as well.

Lets Stand up and Act together against this. Why tolerate this! The following is one of the clauses from the Indian Constitution under which the stalkers and abusers of Orkut can be punished. 293. Whoever sells, lets to hire, distributes, exhibits or circulates to any person under the age of twenty years any such obscene object as is referred to in the last preceding section, or offers or attempts so to do, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine, or with bot

Some simple steps can go a long way ensuring our privacy.

1. Never share password with anyone.
2. This is the most important, beware of the Pishing sites i.e. Pishing sites are exact look alike of the original sites. They will try to ask your username and passwords to authenticate your sessions.

Always before entering your login information, just make sure to check the web address is correct or not.

This is again another important thing the sites with 'https' should be only used to make secure transactions like transferring money etc.
