Hail the dynamic duo Denzel & Crowe

Movie – American Gangster

Director – Ridley Scott

Awards - Nominated for 2 Oscars. Another 5 wins & 28 nominations more

Denzel Washington and Rusell Crowe two of the most powerful names in Hollywood Cinema unite in Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, American Gangster. As expected big names firing great guns, an ultimate blast of drug trafficking plot where two great actors collide and the resulting outcome, one hell of a dramatic entertainer. The Crowe-Scott combination does it again; Scott successfully extracts the best out of Crowe which is unbelievable. Denzel Washington’s godfather portrayal of the real life gangster, Frank Lucas who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service is extravagant and immortal. Scintillating dialogues, spectacular performances and brilliant storytelling, American Gangster makes its way into Ridley Scott’s classic and countless masterpieces...
In 1968, Frank Lucas ( Denzel Washington ), the loyal driver and collector witnesses the death of his boss and mentor Bumpy Johnson. Frank finds that Harlem has lost its leadership. So he decides to import heroin direct from the source in Bangkok, by establishing a miraculous means of transportation using the US military airplanes from Vietnam to USA. The quality of his product associated to the trade mark "Blue Magic" and the lower prices bring Frank Lucas to the position of number one distributor of heroin in USA. Meanwhile, in the EssexCounty, the incorruptible detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe ) studying for the Bar Examination is invited to join and head a Federal Investigation Force of Narcotics, seeking the leaders of the dealers in North America. So Richie and Frank fight a face to face battle against drug trafficking as Richie crushes the entire network using Frank.

Denzel Washington comes back after 2006’s disappointing Deja Vu and man he makes his comeback in a big way. He is nothing less than Al Pacino from Scarface in this one. Every time he shows up he comes with fire bomb dialogues and immensely powerful on screen persona, turning it into Washington’s one of the best portrayals. The one where he walks down the lane into a coffee shop with his family as he describes his business, it leaves you speechless. Washington digs in deeper into the role of a classic family man, cold businessman, and charming man-of-the-community, a perfect on-screen autopsy of the drug lord Frank Lucas.

Rusell Crowe, he is inevitable and vibrant. He perfectly blends in the role of the play boyish and morally restricted cop Richie Roberts. A great actor who can portray any possible character in this world, be it the winning gladiator or a  genius mathematician, nothing is impossible for the exceptionally talented Rusell Crowe. You just keep wondering as who is the best one since both Denzel and Crowe compliment and overcast each other with powerhouse performances. As the time comes when the two mercurial stars finally sit down for one scene, it's on par with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, an on-screen manifestation.

Ridley Scott proves it once again that he is a brilliant and a genius storyteller. The way he executes the script is massive and astounding, you can feel the same as the movie comes to its solid and hard-hitting climax. How can such a prolific masterpiece can be left neglected at the Oscars with just two nominations. American Gangster is intense, powerful and dramatic, one that reminds you of epics like Godfather and Scarface. Witness two legendary actors in sublime form and ruling at their penultimate peak of perfection.
