Time and again Steve Carell has proved to be one of the finest actors Hollywood has produced till date. Dan in Real Life is Carell’s one of the most classic entertainer. Directed by Peter Hedges starring Golden Globe winner Steve Carell and Oscar winner Juliette Binoche, this movie is 2007’s most fresh and relishing piece of romantic comedy drama. Dan Burns is a newspaper columnist, a widower and a father to three daughters Jane, Cara and Lily who lives in New Jersey. Of the three daughters Jane had a boyfriend about which Dan comes to know on the day the family goes out for a vacation to his parents in Rhode Island. Dan tries hard to keep Jane away from her boyfriend. Along with his parents Dan also had a brother named Mitch in his family. One fine morning Dan’s mother forces him to go out to the town in order to give some space to his daughters. He visits a book shop where he meets Marie. As a stranger Dan starts sharing everything about him with Marie. Both of them continue talking for hours but soon a call interrupts Marie and she leaves in a sense of urgency confessing she has a boyfriend. Dan comes back home and describes his brother Mitch and his family about Marie with excitement. At the same time Mitch introduces his family to his girlfriend who surprisingly turns out to be Marie. Dan and Marie remain in a shock for a while to realize what has happened.
Dan and Marie try hard to deny their weakness and attraction towards each other. Meanwhile Dan messes up his relationship with his daughters. Unable to control her weakness for Dan, Marie breaks up with Mitch. When Mitch comes to know about Dan and Marie, he brutally punches Dan on his face. Finally things ends up happily with Dan’s family supporting his feelings for Marie and both get married, while Mitch gets engaged with one of Dan’s childhood
friend.
Steve Carell ecstatically blends into the role of a lost father and a confused lover. Juliette Binoche is simply outstanding and plays the role of Marie to absolute perfection and innocence. As a matter of fact what brings a smile in your face after watching this movie is the sparkling chemistry between Carell and Binoche. For example, there is a moment when Dan finds himself helpless and defenseless to control his feelings for Marie and ends up singing a fabulous song for her “Let my love open the door”; it will simply make you cry.

If you are lonely, down and broken out then watch Dan in Real Life. It shows that life is full of surprises, you loose something and the very next moment God gifts you a package full of reasons to laugh and stay happy with. It makes you feel that there is a bit of Dan in everyone of us. Personally speaking this movie is close to my heart. I strongly recommend all the viewers to enjoy it with your beloved, because in some way or the other it will successfully add a desirable sweet innocence in your relationships. Watch it, it stays in you forever.
Finally as Dan says, “When tragedy befalls you, don't let that bring you down, love can cure your problems, you're so lucky that I am around, Let my love open the door, to your heart.”
