Movie – Wake Up Sid Director – Ayan Mukherjee
Starcast - Ranbir Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Konkona Sen Sharma and Others. Life is all about smile, laughter and happiness. They come in different faces and all we need is to enjoy and relish them in the journey. These are the moments that come alive in a single package of fun filled, refreshing and most importantly an inspiring gift named, Wake Up Sid. Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal as the lazy, dum and simultaneously energetic Sid Mehra will stay as his finest performance forever. Wake Up Sid is a fresh, simple and sincere attempt by the young debutant director Ayan Mukherjee. Sid is like a classy mirror image of the child suppressed inside every one of us, in fact what’s so good about the character is that every single being can look or relate with. Ranbir’s mind blowing performance, marvelous tracks and extraordinary simplicity; Wake Up Sid is all about next gen friendship, next gen love and next gen relationships...
Sid Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) is a spoiled son of the rich and wealthy CEO of a bathroom shower company, Ram Mehra (Anupam Kher). Sid takes his privileges for granted, and ultimately winds up failing in his final semesters. His father gives him a job in his firm, but he doesn’t lasts for more than a week. This leads to a conflict between him and his best friends, his mother Sarita (Supriya Pathak) and father Ram Mehra. Alienated from his friends and family, he moves to his recently turned new friend Aisha Bannerjee (Konkona Sen Sharma) who has just arrived from Kolkata and desires to become a professional writer. Despite their lack of common interests, Aisha allows him to stay at her flat. And then starts the journey of self discovery where Sid slowly comes to realize what responsibility is and gradually matures and finds his own identity as a photographer. As he does so, he finally reconciles with his parents and moves back to their house winning his roommate and friend Aisha's heart. You can't imagine someone other than Ranbir Kapoor as Sid Mehra at the first place. He perfectly handles the innocence and emotions in the character with utter conviction. For example the way he confronts Anupam Kher and Supriya Pathak just before the climax, displays the level of maturity this talented actor contains within. In fractions you find yourself lost in the adorable, confused and childish world of Sid portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor. Wish he continues playing such selective roles rather than losing himself in stereotyped lover boy characters. Anupam Kher is fabulous in a short role as Sid’s father. Konkona Sen and Supriya Pathak are equally good. Ayan Mukherjee deserves equal share of accolades, he comes with something that one time wonder Farhan Akhtar did long back in 2001’s memorable masterpiece, Dil Chahta Hai. One of the major positives of Wake Up Sid is the music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Beginning with Kya Karoon, Life is crazy, Iktara and finally the title song; every single track is extremely melodious, soothing, hummable and blends in perfectly with solid timing. It’s surprising to see something like Wake Up Sid coming from Karan Johar productions, one who believes in age old pathetic masala movies.
At times we take relationships for granted but once we realize how important they really are in our everyday lives, our world changes and every second life turns out to be immensely enjoyable and fruitful. Three of the most touching moments are, one where Supriya Pathak gives an explanation to Ranbir behind her efforts of speaking English, second where Anupam Kher gives the reason to Ranbir behind stopping photography and lastly when Ranbir takes photographs of the kid with his mother at the neighbourhood.
Innocence, love, affection and responsibilities all defined in a new frame. Wake up Sid comes as something different; it’s a treat for Ranbir fans. This is nothing less than a wake up call for the teenagers and youngsters of today’s generation. Watch it, enjoy and have a blast like never before.
Rating – 7.5/10
