Puneet Malhotra’s debut directorial venture, ‘I hate Luv Storys’ is a spoof of all the Chopra/ Johar romantic comedies we have seen over the years, with occasional references to Dil Chahta Hai and a couple of Bhansali movies. And it does go all the way. From exotic swiss locales to the insanely repetitive airport chase sequences, the makers have spoofed everything. And that’s fun to watch, especially if you have seen the originals! There are some genuinely funny scenes and dialogues, and some of Imran’s expressions are priceless! Briefly, the movie is about two very contrasting characters, Jay (played by Imran Khan) and Simran (named so intentionally, and played by Sonam Kapoor). Jay is the cynic, and Simran is the quintessential romantic, whose belief in love stories is as strong as a devout Catholic’s faith in the Bible. While Jay smooth sails through life dating one pretty girl after another, Simran has settled for who she thinks is ‘the one’, and is looking forward to a blissful life ahead. All is well, until the two end up working together on the sets of Veer Kapoor’s (Sameer Soni) film. The rest of the movie is a very typical love story, a love triangle rather, and follows the usual drill- beginning with the wonderful feeling of falling in love, followed by the excruciating pain of a heartbreak, followed eventually by the reconciliation. The point of the film being that you cannot understand or know Love until the day you fall in love yourself. Love is incomprehensible until it happens to you. Very Dil Chahta Hai-esque.
I was pleasantly surprised by Imran’s performance. In contrast to his previous films, he has done a relatively decent job here. He still has a long way to go, though. His most demanding scene in the film is a teary phone conversation with his mom, in which he looks quite convincing, although Anju Mahendru (the mother) looks like she is talking to her second cousin from India, and not the son who left home and now lives in another continent. Sonam Kapoor is beautiful. She has a face that has the potential to earnestly express a plethora of emotions. She can be feisty and vulnerable at the same time; she can be the girl- next- door and ultra glam at the same time. But so far, I haven’t actually seen her act. In fact, it seems to me that all she does in the film is either smile or, when she is not smiling, look insipid. But, she is only three films old. So lets give her the benefit of the doubt. She has potential; now all she needs is a director who can make her loose her inhibitions. There is a lot of talk about the ‘crackling’ chemistry Imran and Sonam exhibit on screen. Critics went to the extent of calling them the next ‘Shahrukh- Kajol’ in the making. Honestly, I don’t see it. They look good together on magazine covers, no doubt. But when they act, there is no sexual tension between them; their interaction seems purely platonic. In the last scene when the two hug each other, you could cringe- Imran looks like he is hugging his sister and Sonam looks like she is embracing her brother. I wouldn’t label this film as one of my favourite romantic comedies, nowhere close! But for those who enjoy this genre, I would recommend it. It is funny, sometimes even hilarious, in parts. And if you have ever been in love, there are scenes you would relate to. One of my favourites is the one where Sonam, after having been rejected by Imran, says, ‘I feel like a fool’. Good one! But the movie isn’t flawless. There are several scenes that are amateurishly executed. The casting is good, but the performances are too understated. Having said that, for a first time director though, this is a pretty good effort.
