I just finished watching Rajneeti, and I must say, I wasn't very impressed. Probably because I went in with a lot of expectations, thanks to the innumerable good reviews the movie has gotten, and that I happened to notice. The movie is good, but not fantastic. It seems to me that the film is all about political retribution. It's about a bunch of dirty politicians, all of whom seem to be immoral and terribly flawed... which is fine, since I don't expect everyone to be righteous. But, do they all have to be murderers? They don't flinch before pulling a trigger, or orchestrating a murder; what is appalling is that not one of those politicians comes across as sympathetic, someone I could connect with, someone I would vote for in an election, for instance! I agree politicians have to be shrewd, they have to be street- smart, and maybe sometimes foxy; its a dirty world, and the competition is cut- throat (no pun intended), but do they all have to be conniving criminals? What is even more appalling is that they all get away scot-free! Of course, they don't think twice before plotting an assassination; they know beyond an ounce of doubt, they are not going to get anywhere near a conviction in a million years! Prakash Jha paints a rather gloomy picture of the political scenario in India. I am not saying politicians are saints, but to brand all of them as thugs is a bit too much! There ought to be some who are decent, clean, idealistic, men of integrity, whose primary goal is to serve the people not eliminate anyone and everyone who stands in opposition to their political ambitions, with absolutely no regard for law and order. I would have appreciated the film a lot more if Prakash Jha had included at least one such character in his script. I understand the realism in the film, but there has to be hope at the end of the tunnel. And I don't think Katrina's character is that hope either; I wouldn't label her a politician, not yet. She seems too naïve and too unambitious to be a political leader. Without a shrewd advisor, she would be lost; I would have my doubts about her as a strong leader.
On the other hand, one could argue that Ranbir Kapoor's character was thrown into this mess because law and enforcement officials couldn't have done anything about his father's murder; he had no choice but to take matters in his own hands. What bothers me about this argument is that nobody in the party seems to object to his tactics! Except his girlfriend, who incidentally, has nothing to do with running the country! There is no clean politician in this movie and that's what is disturbing! In fact, it's safe to say I don't even see the point of the movie! Plus, there are quite a few loopholes in the story. For instance, Katrina Kaif seems to fall in love with Arjun Rampal all of a sudden! There is no light shed on how and why? For one, I don't think it was necessary for that to happen... she would have become party leader either way. And secondly, I can't help but think Katrina might have had an ulterior motive to pretending to be in love with him. But I can't really speculate on that because nothing of the sort is talked about in the movie. The best thing I liked about the plot are the parallels drawn with the Mahabharath and its principal characters; that is interesting to watch. The performances are, needless to say, excellent. Ranbir Kapoor is a natural, his performance is effortless; he is one of the few truly gifted actors of commercial Hindi cinema. In fact, he is way ahead of his contemporaries; the Imran Khans and Neil Nitin Mukeshs of the industry are nowhere close to catching up with him. Katrina is good, she is getting better with every film. I think Arjun Rampal's character was as difficult to portray as Ranbir Kapoor's, and though the actor does well, he wasn't convincing enough. Of the rest, Manoj Bajpai and Nana Patekar showed once again how insanely talented they are. Although I must say Ajay Devgan was very predictable... he should probably stop doing the same kind of roles...
I was led by the trailer to believe that the love story is a major part of the plot. It is not. In fact there is a good 20 minutes in the film when Katrina Kaif completely disappears from the scene. The film is about dirty politics. I think, in comparison, Yuva was a much better film. It depicted the ugly side of politics as well, but at the same time talked about the hope of clean and progressive politics led by the youth of today. The younger generation in Rajneeti, in my opinion, were far worse than their fathers and grandfathers, especially when it came to integrity of character. Like I said earlier, I couldn't understand the point of the movie... I don't know what Prakash Jha is trying to say through this film! Not to say that every movie should necessarily have a point, but a filmmaker of this caliber, I think, should make one. Trackback(0)

Prakash Jha is a dumb. When you make a movie, at least need to do some back ground work. The movie is terribly flawed. I think Prakash Jha portrays the rajneeti of Ruwanda. There is not a hint of rajneeti in the movie rajneeti. Either Mr Jha thinks we are dumb or he is supremely dumb.

There is a reason why I generally don't like 'realism' in movies- they tend to make for such bleak plots. I mean, come on people, we LIVE in the real world- I don't want to be told just how bad this world s**ks for the space of two hours- daily life teaches us that everyday!
