Invictus tells the inspiring true story of Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) who joined forces with the Captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Paineer (Matt Damon) to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela had the knowledge about his nation remained racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. With a firm believe that he could bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallied South Africa's rugby team as they made their historic run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship match.

Morgan Freeman as President Nelson Mandela rules all the way. His dialogues, his expressions and his convincing thoughts are speechless and captivating. It reminds of one of his all time masterpiece portrayal in 1992’s Ellis Boyd Redding from The Shawshank Redemption. The look and the peace residing in his eyes make the character of President Mandela relishing and memorable. Matt Damon is at his very best as the South Africa’s rugby team captain, Francois Paineer. A bit disturbed and a bit confused of his credibility as a South African so called white citizen and the captain of a loosing team, Damon deserved every rightful chance at this year’s Oscars for the best supporting actor category.

Clint Eastwood is an unstoppable force. Million Dollar Baby, Changeling, Gran Torino, etc you just can’t stop counting the enormous gifts this great actor and director has gifted to the world of cinema in around thirty long remarkable years of his sky high career. In Invictus, Eastwood shows that how a game can unify people with a moving message that is enormously touching. Hats off to the legend.

There are real heart touching moments in the story which are thoroughly engaging, like the one when Francois Paineer visits the cell where Nelson Mandela was a prisoner with a poem being narrated by Morgan Freeman, another being Francois along with his team visit the local kids for coaching. Mandela’s cell, the blanket, the size and the floor inspires and touches hard. Music has always been a benchmark in Eastwood movies, so is it incase of Invictus. The score by Kyle Eastwood and Michael Stevens blends with the script perfectly.

Soul stirring, uplifting and moving, Invictus acts as a symbol of unity and an epic sized win against racism and apartheid. A treat for Eastwood, Morgan and Damon fans, it’s the feel good factor delivered to the best.
