Three words to describe “DON’T MISS IT” Movie - District 9
Director - Neill Blomkamp
Actor - Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope & Others The science fiction masterpiece District 9 comes as a sensationally shocking surprise of 2009; this is the best ever alien invasion movie you might have ever witnessed. The first question that comes to your mind after watching it is where was such a powerful and top notch talent like Sharlto Copley hiding since years. Hats off to the dynamic duo, the actor Sharlto Copley and the director Neill Blomkamp for delivering a massive thrilling experience ever imagined. The heart wrenching emotions, the drama, the suspense, movies like District 9 come once in a lifetime, it is a masterpiece, a visual treat in its genre just like The Hangover was for comedy and The Dark Knight for super hero movies. You are barely left with words about the moments you deal with in 112 minutes of non stop adrenaline rush drama. The story begins with the massive star ship that arrived twenty eight years back above Johannesburg, South Africa. The space ship had aliens later on nicknamed "The Prawns" where placed in a refugee camp which was heavily militarized and restricted from civilians called District 9, the place where the Prawns where confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, a private company Multi-National United is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) in charge. But MNU was interested in using the aliens advanced weaponry, which without alien biology is useless for humans. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and ultimately relies on the help of two Prawn friends to rescue him out of his misery. Heroically battling his friends back to their mother ship Wikus wins the war at the cost of his love and his human existence. Sharlto Copley is an absolute winner. The touching innocence, the expressions and the much needed panic in the character Wikus Van De Merwe lost in the fight between humans and aliens, is all because of this great actor who turns District 9 into an extravagant thriller. Undoubtedly District 9 belongs to Sharlto for such a marvelous performance; I am eagerly waiting to see him in upcoming movies and the sequel of course because this is one hell of an actor that just can’t be passed by. He rules over the entire script but the last 40-45 minutes is where Sharlto shines like a gem.
The writer and director Neill Blomkamp, hardly anyone might have heard this name in Hollywood Cinema since years. With zero glossy looks and slicks, the extraction of hardcore touching reality he brings out of an alien dominated plot is sheer brilliance. Technically genius and dimensionally extraordinary, District 9 comes as a revelation by the mastermind, Neill Blomkamp. And finally Peter Jackson, the name says it all; it’s the brand that makes this movie so special. The classic music by Clinton Shorter and the mesmerizing cinematography by Trent Opaloch add the enthralling impact in this mind blowing journey of unstoppable entertainment.
Personally I was going to miss it or was planning to go for it later on because of a vague impression of District 9 being some sort of boring documentary. But one of my friend kept persuading me to jump on to it at the very moment. So while the end credits came up and I turned my head to him with mouths wide open, he kept yelling at me the whole way that he was telling me, we cannot afford to miss it. Literally I am going to be the first in line at the counters for the highly anticipated sequel.
District 9 is loaded with excitement, thrills, emotions and a brilliantly executed climax. With no surprise this is definitely going to ring the Oscar bells. Don’t let this go, such classy entertainers are hard to find these days and District 9 is a product with enormous resale value, one that truthfully deserves multiple watches. Strictly recommended for theatrical viewing.
