Movie – Marley & Me
Director – David Frankel
Starcast - Owen Wilson , Jennifer Aniston and Others. Finally Owen Wilson comes out with a matured and realistic performance in the heart warming drama, Marley & Me, the story of an angel named Marley who walks into Grogan family and changes it forever. The chemistry between Wilson, Aniston and the dog Marley makes it a wonderful heart touching experience all together. After 2006’s classic The Devil Wears Prada, David Frankel returns with this top notch family entertainer. Based on the autobiographical book by John Grogan himself, Marley & Me is extraordinarily touching; it gifts countless laughter and even makes the hardest of the cynics to cry at the end…
The married couple John ( Owen Wilson ) and Jennifer Grogan ( Jennifer Aniston ) led a happy and peaceful family until the world’s worst dog, Marley as a puppy arrives to their life. Marley has a weird and uncanny nature of eating and chewing every possible thing from furniture to clothes everything. As years pass by, John and his wife, Jennifer, have babies and in the meanwhile Marley grows and he becomes more vulnerable, funny, wild, one who cannot be trained forever. Marley turns the Grogan’s life miserable and enjoyable at the same time, but this happiness doesn’t last forever as Marley’s second attack of Gastric dilatation volvulus, takes him away from the Grogan family. He passes by as John finally admits Marley to be the greatest dog, one who made his life beautiful and enjoyable every single day he had spend with Marley.
This is Wilson’s finest and sensible performance till date; he brings the perfect balance between the funny and sentimental side of the character John Grogan. Wilson’s last outing in the comedy Drillbit Taylor was good but Marley & Me is his best one, at least I am happy to see him crying after ages. Jennifer Aniston looks gorgeous and delivers a fine performance after 2006’s The Break-Up. The dog Marley is notorious, cute and lovable; he is the real show stopper in Marley & Me. His chewing, weakness for thunder storms everything is wonderful to watch. The heart to heart connection between Wilson and Marley is brilliantly captured, there are two classic moments one is the hugging Wilson gives at the end when Marley is in death bed as Wilson cries while saying, believe this you are a great dog Marley whom once he considered to be the worst. And two is when Wilson and Marley go on a walk and sit on a hill top, watching the sunset, are the moments which brings your heart out.
Marley & Me shows that today apart from family a dog can be a man’s true best friend, he stays with him till the last breath giving him the warmth of a mother, a father and a good friend. It makes you believe that life is not just beautiful and gifted wrapped in a shiny pack, it is made beautiful and can be to limitless extents if we want to. How many people can make you feel rare, pure and special? It’s a pet that can give you a life irrespective of wishes and demands. Like the one Wilson says at the end, “A dog has no use for fancy cars, for big homes or designer clothes; a water log stick will do just fine. Dog didn’t care for your rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb, give your heart and he will give you his.”
Marley & Me is funny, warm and touching, one that redefines happiness with loving innocence and affection. Witness an angel in the name of Marley, as he gives you an extraordinary feel good experience. It will make you love your dog much more than before. Ratings – 7.5/10
