Perverse & Vulgar adaption of Sarat Chandra’s masterpiece
Movie - Dev D
Director - Anurag Kashyap
Actor - Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill & Others
Music - Amit Trivedi
Here comes the most awaited release from director of “Black Friday” (I know you all are shouting “No Smoking”). The movie is a shameless and vulgar adaption of “Devdas”. You have watched Shahrukh Khan’s Devdas, where your feel pity for Dev, and in Dev D; you draw orgasmic pleasure from his suffering and apathy. All the characters are vulgar with very loud characterization which arouses no sympathy from audiences. The movie has a very loosely baked script with extreme perverse elements. In the name of modern, unconventional and maverick film making, Kashyap is pushing his world of moronic elements before all audiences. It’s a shame for us to see the movie as a symbol of mockery of Sarat Chandra’s classical tragedy Devdas which commands all respect.
The movie begins with Dev (still a child) teasing his father by his name-completely which is atrocious. He was send to London for his studies. In London, he chats with Paro and requests her to send her nude picture. She obeys with all her bravado. The manhood inside Dev boils looking the nude picture of Paro and he decides to return to India. After his return, both are desperate for that manhood act at each and every available place even in the sugarcane field. It feels real shame to describe the script so I leave this here. The character Dev is exuberant and reckless, and spirals into aimlessness after Paro's marriage.
The worst part of the movie is the script and the pace. After 45 minutes there is nothing left in the movie. It drags on and on and on. All the sequences in the script keep on repeating, the bar and the pub with same music and ambience. Chandramukhi is the worst part of DevD’s script. Man, I will tell you, this girl is tainted with MMS scandal and she abuses her father for watching her MMS. She escapes from her husband and works as a sex worker who dresses up in different looks every night. Her room looks like a perverse neurotic sex worker’s room. The screenplay is weak and too loose work from Anurag Kashyap. Many times I felt that the abusive words are imposed in the script forcibly without any relevance. One feels like hitting the head in the joking scenes.
It’s still unbelievable about this new actress accepting the role of perverse character development. She has done her part good and also the Chanda. The chunni was the yeda yakub of Black Friday and has done a neat job. Abhay seals the show with his acting and moreover with his onscreen presence.
The one and only thing which makes this movie watchable is Abhay Deol, replace him; and the movie will suck and stink. This man has a great onscreen presence which suits the character that Dev demands. He does perfect justice to this new adaption of Dev. The urbane look with cool casuals, gelled hairs, pair of glasses and a college guy bag of Abhay Deol is a great. I have heard that Abhay himself has selected these costumes. The background music by Amit Trivedi is good though not great. At times it sounds like noise but the music has potential to appeal among the youth. The best part is it music mixes well with the proceedings of the movie. It is a failed attempt to create the desi effect of “Requiem for a Dream” through the script of Devdas. To create the psychedelic ambience they used a lot of hip hop cuts, extreme close ups, green tinting, slow motion shoots and all sorts of junk in this movie. Frankly speaking, this shameless movie doesn’t deserve a review. It's simply unbearable crap.
It’s a shameless blunder from Kashyap. A strictly no no for average movie goers.
The movie will appeal to some sections of urban youth who like the psychedelic ambience.
