Movie – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Director – David Fincher
Starcast - Cate Blanchett , Julia Ormond , Brad Pitt & Others
Awards - Won 3 Oscars. Another 14 wins & 62 nominations more
After a dismal and overrated outing in early 2008’s Burn After Reading, Brad Pitt returns with a gem of a performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Despite Pitt’s Oscar nominated performance the movie falls short of entertaining it viewers’. This case of Benjamin Button is not that curious as it was expected to be at the very beginning. The movie rests completely on Pitt’s shoulder and lacks the pace needed to keep it gripping even in the presence of Oscar Winning actress Cate Blanchett. As a matter of fact what you take back after coming out watching this aging drama is Pitt’s superb performance and Claudio Miranda’s classy cinematography….
The story starts with Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans; old Daisy Williams( Cate Blanchett ) is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital, with her daughter, Caroline (Julia Ormond) Daisy asks Caroline to read to her the diary of Daisy's childhood friend, Benjamin Button(Brad Pitt). Benjamin's diary recounts his eventful journey of an extraordinary life, a man aging backwards, being born as an old man who was diagnosed with several aged diseases at birth. But he survives and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a senior’s homage. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact all throughout, reuniting in their forties when in age they finally match up. The diary continues with the time past in this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years. Finally Daisy takes care of Benjamin as she grows old and Benjamin turning into a toddler, he closes his eyes in Daisy’s arms.
This goes into the records of an all time classic performance by Brad Pitt till date, Seven, Troy, Babel and now The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He brings the much needed sympathy and innocence factor in the character of the old Benjamin and takes the movie into rising levels beyond imagination. You are simply stuck with his marvelous portrayal of old Benjamin in the first hour. But once he gets into his play boyish act in the second half he looses it completely and starts up with his boring ascent. Still he comes out with one of his most impressive and outstanding performance. Starting with the brilliant narration “I was born under unusual circumstances” by Pitt himself, he blends into Benjamin’s character ecstatically. Cate Blanchett has little in the name of scope to prove herself; she acts as a glam doll in the movie. But the last half hour is where Blanchett comes out shining. Once her lover and then taking care of the same as a mother, this can only be executed by an actress of Blanchett’s unquestionable caliber. The climax where Pitt dies as a baby in Blanchett’s arms is a solidifying heart touching and moving moment to witness. Claudio Miranda’s cinematography is a visionary gift to experience, the astounding visual effects and soulful colors turns it into a riveting piece.
Technically Benjamin is exceptional; Eric Roth’s screenplay is an absolute stunner. Summing it up, take it with the concept of “Older the merrier, younger the dreadful”. A captivating climax and enthralling first half( Pitt’s excellence), this innovative concept of backward aging could have been much more interesting and relishing if director David Fincher could have given his best into it. You can’t afford to miss it for Pitt’s lifetime performance and simultaneously you regret it for being wasted.
Rating – 8/10
