Changeling is an emotionally powerful and a true story of a woman who dares to challenge corruption to get her lost son back. Angelina Jolie gives a highly dramatic performance in this period classic, which definitely holds the upper hand against Kate Winslet in The Reader. The legend, Clint Eastwood brings the best out of Jolie in this one and turns it into one of the most heart touching women centric movie ever witnessed in cinematic history. Changeling is an epic tale of corruption, violence and inspiration that compels even a hardest of a cynic to shed the tears of sorrow.....
The story of Changeling revolves around Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) whose son, Walter is kidnapped at the beginning. She then confronts the corrupted LAPD who retrieve her son but she suspects that the boy returned to her is not her son. She desperately continues to disagree that the boy is not her actual son. Christine invites the child to stay in her home despite knowing without a doubt that he is not her son. She does not accept the injustice being pushed upon her and continues to challenge the Los Angeles police force at every turn. As a result, Christine is framed by the corrupted powers and consequently labeled as an unfit mother considering her as mentally retarded. Local activist Rev. Gustav A. Briegleb (John Malkovich) helps Christine in her search for her son and ultimately ends up with Gordon Northcut (Jason Butler Harner) who has kidnapped and murdered around twenty children.
Gia, Girl Interrupted, A Mighty Heart and now Changeling, as time passed by Angelina Jolie has proved her as one of the most talented and matured actress present in Hollywood Cinema today. In Changeling, Jolie not only delivers one of her most definable performance given till date but also has successfully slammed her critics who questioned her acting skills every now and then. Her scenes at the mental asylum displays Jolie’s intensifying depth and power in which she executes the character of a fighting mother, Christine Collins. But one that steals the show is her punching dialogue at the climax, “But either way it gives me something I didn’t have before tonight, Hope.” That is when your heart goes out for this brilliant actress who deserves all the accolades for making this movie what it has turned out into.
Director Clint Eastwood with no wild guesses continues his dream run of gifting realistic cinema at its best. Changeling proudly makes its way into Eastwood’s countless records of masterpiece collections like The Bridges of Madison County, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima and Gran Torino. Eastwood’s sensational and righteous treatment to the script makes it astoundingly emotional and breathtaking. John Malkovich doesn’t have enough to prove; still he executes his part with brilliant nobility. Jason Butler Harner leaves his mark as the psychotic killer. And of course to add to it was the gem of cinematography by Tom Stern. Starting from costumes to locales every single matter has been handled to absolute perfection leading to an entirely flawless outcome.
Oscar successfully maintains its consistency of sidelining some of the best movies dejected out straight from the first point every year; Changeling is this year’s biggest victim. Most of the movies considered this year in the Oscar are totally restrictive to actors and actresses performances. Changeling is one such movie that had the real potential to knock off Slumdog Millionaire from its reigning success but hopefully they did as they were expected to.
Changeling is sorrowful, gruesome, heartbreaking and an immensely sensitive product crafted by the genius, Clint Eastwood. It is like a story that a women has desired to experience since ages, an inspirational powerhouse that contains the moral message as its best known credibility.
