Those old shops are gone,
Those tiny dirty lanes
where mud played with our toes,
trying to adjust into our shoes,
are lost in to wide roads,
where feet do not kiss the grounds any more
and the moon no longer appears
in water cuddled up in small cavities.

The touch of the earth is a denied existance

Big malls shout everywhere
Into it are lost the echoes of a rattling bullock cart
And the whisper pleadings of an orphan beggar boy.

But what makes you wonder! O soul searcher,
In one of those old shops you had owed few coins,
And in that dhaba you had lost your heart to a girl,
And in that corner stall,
where old dreamy men shared their morning tea,
With smoke and a bit of fog,
You had a cup booked for you,
With a fractured handle.

You had also lost your boyhood
In a damp rented room to a prostitue,
Mistakenly loved her till the chilling night could bear no more.
And she had also, for the first time in her life,
told you her name,
that her parents used to call her by.
You had cursed yourself and repented
when she opened her life's pages
Into the night's darkness.
You had lost a sister.

Early in the morning you used to wake up,
To hear a girl rehearse her singing,
To catch the newspaperman on his duty,
To watch the white parrots wake up from their dreams,
Wishing someone would rub their eyes.

Memories are selfish,
Only you live and die in them,
But they are also the world,
You can create and break any time.
