Place Called Hell On Heave
In 1956 Sudan got the independence from United Kingdom. Since Independence, the successive Governments have followed and imposed the Islamic or Arab style of rule, ignoring the demands of the non-Arabs, Non-muslins southern Sudanese. About the size of Texas, the Darfur region of Sudan is home to racially mixed tribes of settled peasants, who identify as African, and nomadic herders, who identify as Arab. The majority of people in both groups are Muslims.
Over the years, the region has become home to two major non-Arab entities: the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the justice and Equality Moment (JEM). These two rebel groups have accused the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum (capital of Sudan) of helping the Arabs, economically and in all other ways, at the expense of the non-Arab ethnic tribes. The two groups have blamed the Sudanese government of systematic marginalization and neglect of Darfur and its inhabitants. The SLM is generally associated with the Fur and Massaleet, while the JEM is associated with the Zagawa of the northern half of Darfur.
The other side of the armed conflict is composed mainly of the Sudanese military and the Janjaweed, a militia group recruited mostly from the Arab Abbala tribes of the northern Rizeigat, camel-herding nomads. The Sudanese government, while publicly denying that it supports the Janjaweed, has provided money and assistance to the militia and has participated in joint attacks targeting the tribes from which the rebels draw support. The conflict began in February 2003.
Government's negligance has left people throughout Sudan poor and voiceless and has caused conflict throughout the country. The combination of decades of drought, desertification, and overpopulation are among the causes of the Darfur conflict, because the Baggara nomads searching for water have to take their livestock further south, to land mainly occupied by Black African farming communities. In February 2003, frustrated by poverty and neglect, two Darfurian rebel groups launched an uprising against the Khartoum government and this took the Sudanese government by surprise, left the airport and several planes in tatters. President Omar Al-Bashir vowed retaliation and began to field the Janjaweed, his newly formed Arab militia group, to do the fighting for him.
In the ongoing genocide, African farmers and others in Darfur are being systematically displaced and murdered. The attacks by Janjaweed on non-Arab villages are preceded by bombardment of the villages by the fighter planes of the Sudanese government. Post-aerial bombing, the Janjaweed move into the village, kill all male and child survivors while taking the women hostage. The kidnapped women end up as sex slaves of the Janjaweed. They have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers and mass murder. Violence, disease, and displacement continue to kill thousands of innocent Darfurians every month. Huts were torched. Donkeys, goats and cows were stolen, slaughtered or dumped into wells to poison the water.
The genocide in Darfur has claimed 400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people. More than one hundred people continue to die each day; five thousand die every month. To escape the death and devastation millions of non-Arab ethnic people have fled into the Darfur region from southern and northern Sudan. The Sudanese have become refugees in their own country. With Darfur, the refugees live in the Internal Displaced People (IDP) camps. The conditions in the IDP camps are so miserable that they have been described as the nearest thing to hell on earth. Hungers, scarcity of water, disease, squalor, and death have come all together to make life miserable for the refugees in these camps. Long-term peace in Darfur requires that the government of Sudan, the Janjaweed militia forces and the rebel groups of Darfur find a way to resolve their political and economic disputes. The international community managed to broker a peace deal in May 2006, but violence in Darfur actually increased in the wake of this deal.
At this time, Human security is the highest priority for the people of Darfur. The world has left the responsibility of providing security to the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur. They were unable to access the main areas due to two reasons: Raging fighting between the Janjaweed and rival groups and deliberate denial of the access to aid agencies by the Sudanese government.
The African Union brokered Darfur peace Agreement (DPA) was signed by the government of Sudan and the largest of the three rebel movements in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.
Note - The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), the region's biggest rebel movement has split, and hence there is now a total of three such rebel groups. We must now work to ensure that the World fulfills its responsibility to protect the civilians of Darfur.
