Before analyzing the above topic one needs to identify the key words wherein the meaning of this sentence is implicit. These key words are: man, human consciousness and spiritual consciousness. Now let’s understand each of these keywords with reference to the topic in question.
Man: - Here man means an entity or a “being” which has certain level of consciousness ( here consciousness means a sort of awakening). If one follows Max Muller’s logicism, everything animate or otherwise has a consciousness of its own only they differ in the degree to which they are developed. So man as a being has his own consciousness. The present topic warrants a debate on the hypothesis that man is not merely a biological organism with biological conscious but as a logical being that is in perpetual dilemma of deciding on the consciousness that governs him: the spiritual conscious or the human conscious. Now let’s examine what these two types of conscious mean.
Spiritual conscious: - Spiritual means:-
1. Something that refers to divinity, god, transcendental phenomena which are over and above human volition.
2. Something that is based on the intellect and the ideas (idealism of Immanuel Kant)
From this two definitions it could be easily established that whatever definition one takes the common thread between the two is that spirituality refers to those concepts that develop in human mind which eludes any tangible occurrence and invariably supra-sensory. Consciousness means a sort of awakening or perception. So spiritual consciousness means a supra-sensory awakening of the actor.
Human consciousness:- If we consider the definition of consciousness as stated above (awakening) then human consciousness means an awakening about things that lie within the realm of our senses; earthly understandings and the materialist philosophy i.e. philosophy of everyday life that governs our behavior and our reasoning.
From the above two paragraphs we are now in a position to safely hypothesize that the consciousness of man lies in a continuum with the two ends being determined by spiritual concerns and humanly interests respectively. At the middle of the continuum lies the poor “two legged naked creature: thou callest man”(Aurobindo’s definition of man) in his nevr ending dilemma and it has been his endeavor since time immemorial to find out what determines his being. Is he a spiritual being with human consciousness or a human being with spiritual consciousness?
The heart of man pants for many things. Desire moves man more than aught else. Passions may lash up the lake of his mind into a thousand pulsations; grief may burn the iron of despair right into his brain, and make him feel as one stranded; all his emotions and feelings may play upon him; the world outside may fasten its grip upon him, toss him up from pillar to post and beat him flat; yet the impress left by these is sooner or later wiped out and man rises to his feet once more. But not so the iron grip of desire. It holds on to him like grim death. It drags out the soul minute after minute of our existence, electrifies the unwilling hand to exertion and stimulates the brain to accomplish its ends.
Now, there come moments in our lives, when even the greatest money-spinners; the most persistent pleasure-hunters, turn aside from their usual occupations to listen to a voice within them which is constantly asking, "Man, where art thou from? Where art thou drifting along? To what end is all this?—Money, wife, children, and all that you hold next to your heart. "What has a man gained, if he has gained the whole world and lost his soul?"
How a humanly conscious entity could have such inward-looking undercurrents inside his heart? Now to understand the concept let’s start with the hypothesis that man is a human being with some bit of spiritual consciousness and try to refute it through deductive logic.
1. In this hypothesis our starting point of analysis is man is a human being. It means the foundation of his consciousness or thinking pattern is molded on the base of humanly desires or materialistic desires. Now it is a universal fact that at the time of intense strain a living organism banks on its basics for overcoming the intense strenuous situation. For example, animals depend upon their claws and nails for their safety, porcupines’ bank on the spikes and non-preying animals run away from danger. These reactions to stimuli are the basic reactions. If we use this logic to man, why he resorts to spirituality or in more particularly to god and craves for his divine grace to take him out of his precarious situation? This means that banking on some power super—natural and extra sensory has been the fundamental recourse of man. Hence as per our logic, as man’s fundamental tendency is the dependency on the divinity, he could only be a spiritual entity having human consciousness.
2. Secondly, what intrigues me is our elaborate rituals about birth especially about death. Since ages every civilization has believed in life after death. Even mayans, Egyptians and Sumerians had provided things of daily usage along with the dead in the graveyard. We know if we want to learn about human mind we have to go back to the primitive man because that makes our endeavor easy because of the simplicity. Primitive man despite his ultimate simplicity was inward looking, so this thesis can be generalized for the man of today also.
3. The best evidence for man’s spiritual tilt is the belief in God. The prevalence of God in our society, our culture and in our mind is the proof that we look for something extra-sensory, we respect that force and we see that force in awe. This belief makes us inward looking.
The above are the evidences of man being a spiritual being with human consciousness. I would like my readers to put their comments on it.

Human being to me is a living entity who is above the beast in creation/Nature and equipped with an extra quality- intellect/reasoning power other than common instincts and sensual urges. Man needs to show discrimination to show his difference of being a being of a higher level. Sadly, man often indulges and sates his animal impulses in excess and feels, as a result, a sense of guilt and helplessness when the inevitable results follow. The animals do not think, do not feel, do not grieve. But man does all. He is an escapist, mostly, when overcome by problems of his own making or accidental. He needs a solid support to take recourse to. The destination is spirituality. To support, to soothe, to encourage, to console, to confess and to continue. A minority drag on living life practically worrying about nothing. They need not the crutches of spirituality. My observations on this evergreen theme!
