Is drinking an evil? 2 Years ago Karma: -1
The increasing acceptance has termed social drinking a harmless act Or is it an evil which our society is starting to accept for its inability to stop the phenomenon?

There cannot be a second opinion on this is my strong belief: drinking is definitely an evil. My heart bleeds to see government bars doing brisk business- in crores. People drink liquor as casually as they would drink coffee or tea. From youth to old men, from daily wage-earners to affluent people, millions are in the strong grip of this addiction. The government is bent on the easy income to distribute freebies and buy votes, stay in power and make millions for themselves and heirs. The Media sensationalises the booze to attract audience and maintain popularity by titillating them with showing free licence to cultivate this habit. Both the government and the media are unscrupulous in encouraging this 'culture' which spells the doom of the future India.
A person stops being a normal, sensitive, sensible human being under the influence of liquor. It is tragic, very tragic. A modern malady that makes me depressed in utter helpessness.

Though I don't endorse drinking but I beg to differ.

Human minds are mostly programmed for their thoughts which depends on our level of education and upbringing. We hardly challenge our values and cultures. No matter whatever happens people will believe in God because they are taught to believe in god since their childhood not that they believe in GOD or felt GOD. These values teach us to stay away from drinking. Lets argue from logical point of view. The most possible reasons may be:

1. Drinking is harmful for health.

2. It is an addiction.

3. Humans tend to lose their senses and behave equivalent of a beast.

But then again social drinking doesn't show any of the harmful effects mentioned above.

1. If taken with proper precaution the harmful effect is negligible. It tends to be beneficial if taken in restricted amounts and after proper meals. After all its mixture of fruit juices with spirit.

2. Social drinking is never an addiction. Its occasional.

3. Social drinking is light and for fun so there are very less chances of behaving as a beast.

If the above reasons are true, where is the scope to term social drinking as an evil?

Let us leave God out of this. I'm an atheist, sort of.
Social drinking! Statics available speak against your arguments. Drinking is abusing your body, its functions. Nobody in their right senses will try to play with fire- addiction is a surreptitious danger, a trap, making life wretched not only for the person who drinks but to those around and ultimately the whole society. No argument can carry weight with me in this matter!Poison is poison, a drop of it or litres of it.

This purely depends on perception.

What i am telling here is that we Indians are born and bought up in a culture which prohibits drinking in any form and we consider it as evil.

Had we been nurtured on the lines of western culture, then would the same drink been so evil?

I know its ill effects but occasional drinking is not at all debilitating for the body.

It depends on the person and amount of self control he imposes to restrict himself from addiction.

If we r to treat this question as a general one..then the answer is social drinking is not an evil..it's a harmless act. But If we r to treat this question with our beloved country in mind..well..social drinking is definitely an evil! Cz...we indians are one big emotion-charged lot and social drinking lures those weak-minded ones [ unfortunately most come under this category] with it's fun filled temporary happiness eventually leads to total addiction! To be short..we indians dont know where and when to draw a 2nd line when it comes to crossing 'the' line! But..but..when i imagine going without occasional sip of harmless wine or sherry...."who said it's an evil? it's definitely harmless!"..
