Its clear that prostitution cant be stopped, should it be legalized to give the sex workers basic rights and putting an end to the PPP (prostitution-pimp-police) network.

It also makes sense in terms of rehabilitation and providing other basic amenities to these workers.

What guarantee is there for these results? Horrid, sickening subject- this oldest trade of the flesh!
Besides such clever arguments what necessity for legalisation? Aiding and abetting an ugly sin with legal sanction? God forbid!

The present situation in India as Wikipedia says

In India, prostitution itself (exchanging sex for money) is not illegal, but the surrounding activities (operating brothels, pimping, soliciting sex etc) are illegal.

It means all the red light areas which are operated in our country are illegal. The system knows it but still they exist. How?

Its the ugly nexus between 3P's (Prostitution-Pimp-Police).

A Lion's share of these woman's income goes towards oiling the machinery of this system and they are caught up in this vicious cycle. All of them doesn't join in the trade voluntarily but many are forced without their consent knowledge until they find themselves in the trap.

First by legalizing, we cant mean to let it grow ubiquitously in our society. Yes, it can be given legal sanction to some particular areas. Legalizing will mainly help to ward off the threat of police and pimps. Yes, it can be small step towards improving their lives. Legalizing is another small step to return their dignity to live. It has also many other advantages like providing better condition to their next generation.

Yes, I agree that there is no guarantee that things will improve after giving it legal status but did things have improved in the present state? Are they able to check prostitution in our present society? Its always those girls suffer and the clients get away easily.

Well...from ur answers..by prostitution u mean only women sex workers...it seems. And in our country...yes..gigolos are not much in picture. So..thru legalization..we wd be authorizing another extremely male-chauvinistic attitude...right? Those magical, powerful PPP...Do u honestly think that thru legalization, we can control these bad elements if not eradicate???? In this corrupted country, we have laws for almost everything under the sun and still crimes are increasing more than ever..DGP's raping teens, politicians with murder charges and what not?..So..let's not dream that thru legalization we can improve those sex workers' pathetic life style!

Well Umbrella,

It seems you got me wrong.

The scenario as of now is like this

The police harasses these workers+clients or extracts their regular haftas because brothels are illegal to operate.

There is no official data of head count or health statistics for the workers. Data with some NGO's cant be considered as complete and accurate. Its very hard for the next generation to progress because most of the things continue surreptitiously and no one is willing to share their identity due to fear from police and pimp.

Time is the only proof prostitution has never stopped, it just changed its forms and survived from generations. It can never be stopped unless the buyers chose to forbit the service. I have strong reasons to believe that due to our callousness (or may be our inherent fear to give it a legal approval) to put a limit on these activities, it has spread from forbidden streets to every nook and corner of our society.

Isn't it sick to find these activities continuing in places like hotels, message parlors, bars, room service etc with least secrecy and respect to the rules of our society.

By Legalizing prostitution to those confined areas and heavy penalty for other areas can be a step to put a check on this ill.

I still agree that humans will find loophole and exploit it but for me its better than the existing system.

A dreamer boy!?
Why such sympathy for the 'workers'? Seeking 'dignity'for them!!!Are all of them exploited, forced into? Including the new venues mentioned in this 'modern' world are the girls not after it as an easy way to earn? Values are crushed underfoot like dirt to ENJOY all the material/sensual comforts/pleasures this world has to offer! I'm never condoning the male beast propelled by biological factors. But I'm not for 'pampering' the 'workers' with government funds, legalising an ugly phase of human behaviour. As umbrella says dreaming of eradicating PPP menace seems a dream. How many more remedies are pending in all other sectors of human life which may benefit well by the tax money proposed to the welfare of these 'workers'!
